Boys & Girls Club Children March to Remember Fallen Maine Veterans

As part of the "Summit Project," a Maine-based nonprofit, the South Portland Boys & Girls Club paid tribute to post-9/11 fallen heroes. As the children marched through South Portland, they carried stones engraved with the names of fallen Maine service members.

Walmart Donates $2,500 Toward Veterans' Monument

The Sanford Walmart donated $2500 to the Southern Maine Veterans' Cemetery Association. Mr. Rivard, Secretary of the Association, met with Walmart manager Cory Ricker to discuss the future purchase a monument honoring soldiers listed as prisoners of war or missing in action. Collette Monuments of Lewiston, Maine provided initial monument sketches.

Wreaths Across America Leads the Way in Honoring Our Nation's Veterans with Support from Walmart

During the holiday season, Wreaths Across America sponsors the placement of fresh, evergreen wreaths on veterans' headstones. This year, Walmart donated $150,000 to purchase 40,000 wreaths and 16 trailers to transport over 80,000 wreaths to 1,000 memorial ceremonies across the country as part of the company's involvement in WAA and National Wreath Across America Day on Dec. 12, 2015.

Maine Veterans Legacy Project to Help Preserve Veterans' Living Histories

All Maine veterans are encouraged to participate in this project to record and archive Maine veterans' histories. The project will also record stories from civilians who supported veterans, family members affected by their service, war industry workers, medical volunteers, troop greeters, and others. The Maine Veterans' Legacy Project is one of over 450 national and local partners collaborating with the Library of Congress (LOC) and its Veterans History Project to archive information. The LOC's project partners are posted at www.loc.gov/veterans.

Maine Korean War Veterans Honored

A ceremony marking the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the Korean armistice that enforced a cease-fire took place at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine. Veterans paid tribute to the 38 POW/MIA’s and 245 Mainers who died during the war. The Governor signed a proclamation designating July 27th as Maine Korean War Veteran Recognition Day.

Maine Women Veterans' Memorial Plaque

Senator Linda Valentino sponsored the the Maine Women Veterans' Memorial Plaque which is now in the Hall of Flags in the Augusta State House.
