Free Legal Aid in Maine

Free legal help is available to qualifying Maine people. Seniors, elderly (age 60 and older), and low income clients who may also be military veterans can receive free civil, not criminal, legal assistance in Maine. Legal services include:

- Advice to clients includes utility disconnection, income, health care, age discrimination, long-term care, nutrition, housing, protective services, defense of guardianship, neglect, and abuse.

- Legal representation and related services are available for individuals age 60 and older and also people who meet income guidelines.

Maine Veteran Medical-Legal Clinic: Maine VA Medical Center

Maine Pine Tree Legal Assistance offers a Medical-legal Clinic in collaboration with the VA Maine Healthcare System, a valuable one-stop shop for veterans facing legal challenges. The project intends to offer legal assistance to veterans with financial, housing, employment, and other life events that can ultimately impact a veteran's overall day-to-day health.

The National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership notes that 1 in 6 people needs legal care to be healthy.

Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP)

The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) is a legal aid organization that provides free legal information, assistance, and representation to Maine residents with low incomes facing civil legal issues.  The VLP helps eligible clients by providing them with the tools and know-how to participate in the legal system and coordinates their volunteer efforts.

How can you access VLP services?

Call, write, or walk into one of their Courthouse Assistance Project (CHAP) for brief consultations.

Pine Tree Legal Assistance (PTLA)

Pine Tree Legal Assistance (PTLA) provides free legal help to qualifying Maine people.  Seniors, elderly, and low income clients, who may also be military veterans, can receive free legal assistance in Maine. PTLA offers only civil, not criminal, legal matter assistance.
