Military Prostitution and the U.S. Military in Asia (January 17, 2009)

Category: Human Trafficking/Exploitation

Katherine H.S. Moon contests the common assumptions in the West that prostitution is "part of Asian culture." Just about every culture under the sun has some version of it during war and peace times.  She notes that there is 'still a question of intellectual "legitimacy," that is, whether prostitutes, prostitution, and sex work warrant "serious" scholarly attention and resources, especially for students of international politics.'

This article also explores government and institutional accountability in the context of others' suggestion that prostitution is a personal decision along with responsibility for consequences.
