Ms. Lindsey Sin, California's Deputy Secretary of Women Veterans Affairs is the speaker at Cal State Fullerton's fourth annual Women Veterans in Higher Education Conference scheduled for March 5, 2016. The conference theme is “Making the Connection: Mentoring, Networking & Sharing Our Experiences” is the theme of the fourth annual Women Veterans in Higher Education Conference at Cal State Fullerton.

Servicewomen and women veterans gathered Thursday at Oklahoma State University for the inaugural Women Veterans Symposium. The conference focused on how women veterans are well prepared to be leaders throughout the community, state, and nation. Retired Major General Rita Aragon, the keynote speaker, shared how women’s roles in the military have changed over time.

First Female Thunderbird Pilot Helping to Showcase Women Veterans’ Stories

Colonel Nicole Malachowski, the first female Air Force Thunderbird pilot, joined forces with First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to promote a social media campaign, #WomenVets, to spotlight women veterans' stories. They goal is two pronged: enhance the image of women veterans and encourage the 200,000 service women now in the military to use their benefits and services when they become veterans. Mrs. Obama shared that only one in 10 women veterans use GI Bill benefits and 75 percent of women veterans don’t use the Veterans Affairs health care system. And, there is a continuing challenge: “One striking reality is that many women veterans don’t self-identify as veterans,” she said.

Military veteran Bobette Brown, a U.S. Army airborne paratrooper, now travels as a motivational speaker, consultant, and transformation consultant. At a "Got Your 6 Storytellers" event in New York, she shared: "You don’t have to look like what you’ve been through. See today, you can choose take your experiences and go from scars to beauty marks. And those battle wounds can become badges of honor. It’s all your decision.” Over time and living life's experiences, she decided not to be "afraid to speak about her wounds...recounting a knee replacement surgery, sexual assault and harassment she experienced in the military or a five-day stretch of sleeplessness from her trauma. Bobette came to the conclusion "that keeping secrets doesn’t do anyone good."

Belleville Military Wife to Climb Kilimanjaro to Help Women

On March 2, 2016, Leia Johnson will set out March 2 with 14 other women and one man in hopes of reaching the 19,000-foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania by March 8, International Women’s Day. The team of climbers wish to highlight the trouble women face in areas of conflict in Syria, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan. Leia is also the founder of "Somebody’s Mama," an nonprofit that sponsors women’s empowerment projects around the globe. "Somebody's Mama" collaborates with a sister group "One Million Thumbprints," which also helps women become independent.

One Stop Service Location For Women Veterans

Andrzejczak Bill to Make It Easier for Women Veterans to Access Services Now Law

Five New Jersey legislators sponsored law A-3750 tasking "the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to create a public webpage with vital information specifically tailored for female veterans." They see a one-step web site as common sense instead of veterans having to gather information in a piecemeal process. They believe it will be a great help to women veterans transitioning to civilian life, many of whom take care of children in addition to their own needs.
