Embattled: Retaliation Against Sexual Assault Survivors in the U.S. Military (2015)

Category: Sexual Harassment/Assault/Trauma

According to military surveys, 62% of the respondents who reported unwanted sexual contact to military authorities experienced retaliation.  They were 12 times more likely to be retaliated against for reporting sexual assault than to see their (military) offender convicted for a sex offense.  In 2014, 5% (175 of 3,261) of sexual assault cases in the Department of Defense's jurisdiction led to a sex offense conviction.  If retaliation is not effectively addressed, sexual assault reporting will be adversely impacted and DOD's cultural reforms will be challenged.
